Peter Maier in Cause of Water Pollution (1 comment , +39 / -5 votes )

#1 As long as EPA does not consider nitrogenous waste (urine and protein) pollution, we will never implement the Clean Water Act, as it was intended. This waste not only, like fecal waste, exerts an oxygen demand, but also is a fertilizer for algae and aquatic plant growth, causing eutrophication and eventually dead zones.

The reason EPA ignored this pollution is caused by a worldwide incorrect applied pollution test that EPA used to base its NPDES discharge permits on.

Although EPA in 1984 acknowledged this incorrect use, in stead of correcting the test, it allowed an alternative test and now officially ignored this type of pollution and by doing so lowered the goal of the CWA from 100% treatment to a measly 35% treatment, without notifying Congress.

Other problems caused by this incorrect applied test are that we do not know the real performance of a sewage treatment plants and have no idea what the effluent waste loading is on receiving water bodies, besides the possibility that such plants are designed to treat the wrong waste in sewage.

Want to know more visit www.petermaier.net and read the description of this test (BOD) in the Technical PDF section.

Avg: Agree
#2 Apparently, too many companies at the TC40 had already received funding (like this one), although the ORIGINAL idea of the TC40 was to give an opportunity to companies who couldn't afford the 10k ticket to sites like Demo. In the end, money talks.

#1 I agree with you Josh, but some people may take Marc's words as disregarding having an original plan as an important part of building a startup:

It is therefore much more important for a startup to aggressively seek out a big market, and product/market fit within that market than it is to try to plan out what you are going to do"

You need to have some sort of plan, just like a football team will plan different strategies depending on who's their opponent, conditions of the field, etc. and yet, they cannot tell ahead of time whether they'll win or not. But of course, as the game develops, you must be prepared to shift gears (and you most likely will). #1 I agree to a certain extent. When you're young, you trade lower expenses for less knowledge. However, for web technologies, it's so dynamic that this advice applies hands over fist...

Which brings me to the next disadvantage. The saying goes, "It's who you know..." It's traditional to think you know more people and have more networks as you get older and you work at your share of big companies.

What do I fit? Having the conviction to believe not being in the Valley and being young that my team can still rise up. :)
